A fantasy journey through the history and future of Cantonese opera

From June 2023, the new season of the Tea House Theatre’s regular original programme offers a new look at Cantonese opera and traditional Chinese music through an innovative framed story presentation.

The 90-minute performance follows the thoughts of a Cantonese opera actor, who travels through time and reimagines the future of his craft in a fast-changing, digitised world. The tale illustrates the richness and diversity of the art form through a highlight selection of familiar songs and instrumental music pieces, with Cantonese opera excerpts written by legendary librettist Tong Tik-sang and a new piece by acclaimed local actor-playwright Keith Lai.

Staged in the traditional setting of the Tea House Theatre and enhanced with state-of-the-art audio and visual technology, Magic Tea House 2.0 – Dreams of the Future is performed by our talented Tea House Rising Stars Troupe and directed by veteran icon of stage and screen Law Ka-ying and Naomi Chung.

Join us for a fun and engaging introduction to an age-old heritage art – perfect for the whole family and audiences of all backgrounds.

Artistic Curator and Director: Law Ka-ying
Producer, Playwright and Director: Naomi Chung*

In February 2024, join us at the Xiqu Centre for a brand-new original production from contemporary Cantonese opera troupe Canto Op. The acclaimed Hong Kong creatives continue their highly popular Lunar New Year presentations with Who is the Best Liar? – a festive comedy about truth and falsehoods.

The fun family show features a lively script by Wyborn Leung Wai-hong and Lee Ting-fung, and captivating performances by local stars Keith Lai Yiu-wai and Alan Tam Wing-lun.

        Synopsis
If relationships are based on lies, who can be trusted?
In this comic tale, Fa Yim-chi and Fa Ka-fun – a mother and son pair skilled in the art of deception – worm their way into the wealthy Chong family by pretending that Ka-fun is a long-lost grandson. As affection for the trusting and generous family matriarch develops, their deception begins to weigh heavy on them. But just as the pair decide to confess their deceit, it appears that an even more shocking deception may be at play…

To celebrate the Xiqu Centre’s 5th anniversary, the acclaimed Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera presents an all-star performance of the popular, gender-switching production The Dainty Gallant.

The performance showcases the skill and artistry of expert wen wu sheng performer (military and scholarly male roles played by a female) Koi Ming-fai – revisiting her role as Wan Siu-pan, a lead female character who cross-dresses as the gallant young man Chor Wan – and long-time collaborator Ng May-ying as the lead huadan (female role).

Written by renowned late playwright Yip Shiu-tuck, The Dainty Gallant features fine martial arts sequences and romantic intrigue. The production is also a stellar example of the art of female-to-male crossing-dressing, a signature feature of Hong Kong Cantonese opera less widely seen in other regional xiqu forms.

              Cast:
Koi Ming-fai as Chor Wan / Wan Siu-pan
              Ng May-ying as Chin King-chu
Chan Hung-chun as Lau Biu / Wan Bik-yan
              Lai Yiu-wai as Lee Kwong
              Chan Ka-ming as Madame Wan
              Lui Hung-kwong as Chin’s Father

This programme is co-presented by the Xiqu Centre and Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera. Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera also performs Romance of the Phoenix Tower on 3 February 2024.

              Synopsis
Dissatisfied with the marriage that has been arranged for her, Wan Siu-pan leaves home and disguises herself as Chor Wan, a young male warrior who soon becomes known as “The Dainty Gallant”.

One day, while staying at an inn owned by Chin King-chu and her father, she discovers that her intended fiancé, Lee Kwong, is the benefactor of the Chin family and has helped them establish the inn as their means of livelihood.

When Chin King-chu is kidnapped by the covetous tyrant Lau Biu, Chor Wan joins forces with Lee Kwong to rescue her. Unaware of Chor Wan’s true identity, Lee Kwong makes “him” his sworn brother and acts as a matchmaker, trying to bring Chor Wan and King-chu together. Meanwhile, Chor Wan finds herself falling for Lee Kwong.

As the three characters become ever more entangled in a complex web of love and deception, what will be the outcome of their story?

China National Peking Opera Company’s adaption of Yue opera classic Birthday Celebration by Five Daughters, created for the debut of its newly established Youth Troupe, is a grand showcase of the impressive skill and versatility of the company’s young performers.

In 2022, China National Peking Opera Company founded its Youth Troupe as a way to cultivate new generations of xiqu talent. As the year also marked the 40th anniversary of the premiere of popular Yue opera Birthday Celebration by Five Daughters, the company decided to adapt it into a new Peking opera production. The creative team, led by renowned director Yang Xiaoqing, elevated the work’s depth and literary quality by giving the story better-developed characters and a fuller arc. Through the cross-genre transplantation, the new adaptation is strengthened by Peking opera’s distinct advantages including its comprehensive range of role types and schools while retaining the signature elegance of Yue opera.

Set in the Ming dynasty, the story begins on the 60th birthday of high-ranking politician Yang Jikang. All of his five daughters and their husbands have come to his residence for a party, but the least well-to-do couple, his foster daughter Sanchun and son-in-law Zou Yinglong, are shunned by the family and kicked out of the house. Soon, Yang is framed by a political rival and loses his title, wealth and home, and Sanchun turns out to be the only child willing to take him in. Fortunately, Zou gets his big career breakthrough just in time to help his father-in-law clear his name and rescue the Yang clan. As Mrs Yang’s 60th birthday rolls in, the whole family once again unites for a day of celebration, rejoicing together after pain and turmoil.

The Xiqu Centre’s third experimental Cantonese opera production The Imperial Decree looks at how individual lives are shaped by predetermination and freewill.

Emperor’s brother Wu, Concubine Wen and Prince Dunhua are summoned to hear the ageing Emperor’s imperial decree. Believing they are soon to learn who will inherit the throne, a state of intrigue and infighting ensues – with each of them revealing their true colours as they battle for the seat of power.

Produced and directed by Naomi Chung, written, directed and performed by Keith Lai, Janet Wong, and Ng Lap-hei – the award-winning creative team behind Experimental Cantonese Opera Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation) and Wenguang Explores the ValleyThe Imperial Decree combines traditional performance techniques with contemporary music and stage design.

Adapted from Eugène Ionesco’s 1952 play Les Chaises, this experimental Kunqu production blends Chinese traditional theatre with Theatre of the Absurd, delivering both in a new guise.

Presented by the award-winning performers of the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, The Chairs is an acclaimed minimalist production that asks us to reflect on the meaning of life, love, loneliness, and the world around us.

On a deserted island, an old man and an old woman set out chairs for a series of invisible guests. After greeting old friends, first loves, their children, and even the emperor, the arrival of a final, long-awaited guest forces them to realise that everything has been an illusion, and that their lives are part of an absurd dream.

This programme is produced and performed by the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe , and presented as part of the Black Box Chinese Opera Festival 2023 . The annual Black Box Chinese Opera Festival highlights productions offering new perspectives on the history, evolution and potential future of Chinese opera. Bringing together emerging artists from around the region, the festival inspires and facilitates exchange between practitioners as part of the contemporary network of experimental Chinese opera festivals.

This year, alongside the Xiqu Centre’s Cantonese opera original productions Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation), Wenguang Explores the Valley and The Imperial Decree (Preview), the programme features The Chairs by the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe and Sister A Da by the Jin Liansheng Gaojia Opera Troupe of Xiamen City.

The festival also includes the Living Heritage Workshop Series – a programme of hands-on xiqu-inspired workshops offering participants the chance to explore traditional crafts and try their hand at making Chinese flower button hairclips and decorative resin-stone brooches.

This September, local audiences can enjoy world-class pingtan performances in the elegant setting of Tea House Theatre.

Led by renowned pingtan artist Gao Bowen, the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe will stage two performances in Hong Kong, featuring a stellar line-up of top pingtan performers including Liu Min, Ni Yingchun, Luo Wenlian, Mao Xinlin and Zhu Yihe.

Marked by its minimalist stage design, pingtan is an ancient musical narrative art form that originated in south-eastern China. Performances typically feature a solo artist in traditional cheongsam, singing, acting and playing an instrument at the same time. Despite the pared-down setup, an expert performer can narrate and act out a vividly engrossing story that captures the audience’s imagination. The characteristic use of jiangnan dialects and humour gives pingtan a uniquely charming regional flavour.

The 24 Septemer (Sunday) performance is a grand showcase of the troupe’s best-known hits, each one a traditional classic beloved by fans of the genre.

For the 23 September (Saturday) performance, the troupe has handpicked a selection of favourites that perfectly represent 12 of the most influential pingtan styles. They are performed by artists who are deemed to be leading inheritors of each style. It is a great opportunity for the audience to sample and compare the distinctive characteristics of a wide array of styles in one sitting.

This programme is co-presented by the Xiqu Centre and Shanghai Center of Chinese Operas, with the Lao Feng Xiang 175th Anniversary as title sponsor.
