LockCha Tea Shop
Main
Taxonomy
Content
Brewing since 1991, LockCha Tea Shop started as a store selling loose tea leaves in Hong Kong. Three decades on, the tea house has grown into a reputable brand with multiple branches selling fine tea, teaware and snacks across Hong Kong, and an online presence that delivers quality Chinese tea and wares to tea lovers worldwide.
LockCha gets its name from the romanisation of “樂”, which means happiness and fortune, and “茶”, the Chinese character for “tea”. Firm believers in fair trade, its founder, Ip Wing-chi, and his veteran sourcing specialists purchase first-rate tea leaves from small tea farmers, journeying across China and Taiwan in search of the finest tea. The brand sends its tea leaves to third-party laboratories for assessment before putting them on the shelves.
Their philosophy for good tea is simple: delicious, healthy, authentic, and worth the money. If that resonates with you, stop by their Xiqu Centre shop for everything you will need to create the ultimate at-home tea experience.

Details
A world-class performance venue promoting Chinese traditional theatre, Cantonese opera and regional forms of xiqu.
Established with the goal of preserving, promoting and developing the heritage art of Chinese opera, the Xiqu Centre presents performances from Hong Kong, mainland China and around the world. Catering for seasoned fans and newcomers alike, we showcase award-winning troupes, master artists and emerging talent, and offer large-scale classic dramas, rare regional productions and experimental contemporary creations. The Xiqu Centre also presents a specially-curated introduction to Cantonese opera, Magic Tea House 2.0 – Dream of the Future, performed by our resident troupe of emerging local artists the Tea House Rising Stars Troupe, as well as film screenings, music performances and a range of related educational activities.
The open public atrium provides a stage for free concerts and exhibitions and a cool, calm space to relax and escape the heat of the sun. You can also enjoy gourmet food and drinks at a selection of restaurants and cafes, and browse xiqu-related items in our gift shop.
Located on the eastern side of the West Kowloon Cultural District, the Xiqu Centre is easy to access. Its state of the art facilities include the large Grand Theatre, the intimate Tea House Theatre, four professional rehearsal rooms and a lecture hall.
The Xiqu Centre’s striking design, created by Revery Architecture (formerly Bing Thom Architects) and Ronald Lu & Partners, blends elements of traditional and contemporary Chinese architecture to reflect the evolving nature of the art of Chinese opera.
Designed to meet recognised sustainability standards and reduce energy consumption, the Xiqu Centre was awarded a Gold rating by Hong Kong’s internationally recognised Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) in 2019.
Winning Design
Revery Architecture (formerly Bing Thom Architects) and Ronald Lu & Partners
There are very few contemporary examples of purpose-built venue for xiqu anywhere in the world. As such, the design requires in-depth study of the art form and its practices. This is compounded with the added challenge of having to respond to an evolving artform that is both historic and contemporary in equal measure.
In order to find the ideal design and consultancy team for the Xiqu Centre, we launched a ten-month long competition in March 2012. Over fifty practices from around the world expressed interest. In December 2012, a joint venture by leading Canadian architecture Revery Architecture (formerly Bing Thom Architects) and Hong Kong award-winning architect Ronald Lu & Partners was selected from a shortlist of five consortiums to design this landmark venue.
Revery Architecture (formerly Bing Thom Architects) and Ronald Lu & Partners’ design answered what we were looking for – the essence of xiqu embodied in a building. It successfully blends theatre, arts education and public space together and the design reflects four core design principles integral to the art form and Chinese culture:
- The concept of ‘flow’ or ‘qi’ is interpreted in the fluid movements in the building and the use of curved planes, arched openings and circular paths.
- The concept of nature is expressed by bringing the landscape into different levels of the building to create in-between spaces;
- The concept of gateway and pavilion is represented in the openness and door-less nature of the design, welcoming different visitors into the building from all four of its corners;
- The concept of courtyard is presented as a generous covered public space on ground level, which serves as a perfect urban stage for events and celebrations.
Our performing arts programmes are collaborative efforts. If you or your organisation have specialist professional knowledge and would like to partner with us on original artistic and programme-related ideas, we invite you to get in touch. Simply email an outline of your proposal and related experience to pacollaboration@wkcda.hk.
There is no fixed format for proposals, and all submissions are considered equally. Thank you for your support.

Xiqu Centre
Excellence, Innovation, Expansion: A contemporary gateway to Chinese Opera
The Xiqu Centre at West Kowloon invites you to a new world of Chinese traditional theatre.
One of the oldest performance genres in Asia, Chinese traditional theatre – xiqu – has more than 300 regional forms still performed today. Our goal is to present the best traditional and contemporary xiqu from Hong Kong, China and around the world, to provide a world-class platform for innovation and virtuosity, and to reach long-time and new audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Excellence
Our commitment to quality and professionalism ensures we deliver the highest standards of production and performance.
In Hong Kong, Cantonese opera has permeated mainstream popular as well as formal culture, influencing even local slang. Despite this deep and broad cultural significance, our city has never had a dedicated centre for the preservation, performance, research and development of our homegrown art form – until now. The Xiqu Centre presents the highest-calibre productions of Cantonese opera classics.
In the larger Chinese-speaking region, xiqu has developed in diverse ways, responding to local societal shifts and cultural trends. Individual masters as well as local contexts have sent the art form developing along divergent trajectories. The Xiqu Centre provides a nexus for professional xiqu artists and troupes from across Asia to engage, collaborate, and better understand our own intra-Asian diversity. The Xiqu Centre is the centre to see the best of the art form from across Asia.
Innovation
We cross artistic genres as well as geographic borders, bringing this classic art form into the 21st century with inspiring contemporary new works.
The Xiqu Centre facilitates opportunities for crossover with contemporary art forms – from dance and theatre to puppetry, film and literature – ensuring this tradition innovates for a modern world and changing demographics. We collaborate with next-generation xiqu artists to develop new works and explore new ideas.
Our digital script archive is developing one of the world’s most comprehensive online collections of Cantonese opera scripts, an invaluable resource to preserve a legacy and ensure continuous creative development. The archive, with English synopses of each play, will offer the English-speaking world access to rare original documents for academic research and artistic creation.
Expansion
The Xiqu Centre expands the reach of both artists and audiences. We secure the position of Chinese traditional theatre in the global arts and culture conversation and help audiences of all ages and backgrounds fall in love with xiqu.
The Xiqu Centre gives us a forum to extend the conversation to wider issues around performing arts traditions, and to explore how contemporary, urban cultures deal with traditional heritage, how we engage as an international community beyond tourism and consumerism, and how we preserve traditional culture while innovating for a “globalised” future. It also gives us a forum to bring together, learn from and cooperate with international arts organisations and experts grappling with similar issues of heritage preservation and cultural development: leaders in Argentina’s tango, Korea’s pansoori, Japan’s kabuki, Spain’s flamenco, Mali’s griot and balafon traditions, plus indigenous forms of puppet theatre, song, music and movement the world over.
Internationally, xiqu is still one of the least understood genres, despite its influences on such contemporary arts as film, animation and theatre. The Xiqu Centre opens a new gateway for international and next-generation audiences to appreciate an art form that many have considered impenetrable. Our rich programmes of traditional and contemporary productions, narrated performances and demonstrations, talks, tours, seminars, workshops and exhibitions, open the art form for new audiences, and demonstrate that Chinese opera can be accessible for everyone.
The Xiqu Centre, home to one of the longest living legacies of performance, gives us a stage to innovate and celebrate the essential quality that unites us all as humans: our creative spirit.
