For three nights, enjoy a variety of jazz sounds by top musicians at the Freespace Jazz Fest’s largest outdoor venue
Following the success last year, Jazzscapes is back with an all-star local and international line-up. From 6 to 8 October, Wonderland hosts nine sessions featuring diverse jazz styles that range from punk and electronica to fusion and world music. Jazz lovers can choose between a 3-day pass for all nine sessions and a 1-day pass for each night.
On Friday, Lawrence Ku, one of China’s finest jazz guitarists, and his trio open Jazzscapes with an exciting set. Hong Kong pianist Patrick Lui takes the stage next with his jazz orchestra in a performance that also features guitarist Eugene Pao and pianist Ted Lo. British jazz trio The Comet Is Coming round up the first night with their psychedelic and punk sounds.
Saturday’s sessions kick off with acclaimed Chinese trumpeter Li Xiaochuan’s gig. Teaming up with 11 musicians from Hong Kong and his hometown of Shanghai, the performance showcases his signature contemporary jazz fusion style. Next up, groove to the effortless vocals and vibrant African rhythms of Grammy Award-winning bass guitarist and vocalist Richard Bona. South African pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini caps the night off with jazz music that is inspired by his Zulu heritage.
Sunday’s sessions begin with Shanghai-based sultry singer-songwriter Voision Xi’s set. Next up, Polish bassist Kinga Głyk and her band are sure to get the crowd on their feet with their blues and funk sounds. Last but not least, we have Antonio Sánchez, one of the world’s most sought-after drummers, and his band performing several high-energy numbers.
