Biography

Four-time Grammy winner Antonio Sánchez is a conservatory-trained classical pianist, composer, and one of the most inventive and heralded drummers in the world. Before pursuing a career in music, he was a gymnast on Mexico’s Junior National Team. Born in Mexico City, Sánchez started playing the drums at age five and began to perform professionally in his early teens in Mexico’s rock, jazz, and Latin scenes. After completing a degree in classical piano from Mexico's National Conservatory of Music, he studied at the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory, where he graduated magna cum laude.


After moving to New York City in 1999, Sánchez recorded nine albums and toured for 18 years with Pat Metheny. He has also performed with Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden and more. He has been thrice named Modern Drummer’s Jazz Drummer of the Year. He is also known for scoring Oscar-winning film Birdman.


His recent projects include his sociopolitical electronica and drums exploration “Bad Hombre”.
