現代中文所用的「設計」一詞雖於十九世紀末才為人廣泛應用，但中國匠人構思及創作器物的傳統已可上溯至數千年前。這些古代設計蘊含對創新的執着、對物料的實驗精神，或是對用家體驗的考慮，與當代設計思潮契合。是次展覽精選故宮博物院一百餘件工藝瑰寶，以設計、製作及使用三個角度解讀中國傳統工藝的藝術價值。展覽亦會與香港的優秀設計師合作，展示傳統工藝對當代設計理念和文化生活的影響。
