隨着香港在近代發展成爲繁榮的貿易城市，中國藝術品的收藏也變得非常活躍。二十世紀中葉以來，私人收藏逐漸傾向對外展示，有贈予公共博物館者，有設立私人博物館者，亦有不時籌辦本地及海外巡迴展覽者。這是首個回顧香港收藏史的大型展覽，透過一百餘件展品，細述香港一個多世紀的中國藝術收藏活動，同時勾勒本地博物館發展的軌跡，並向一直為香港及海外觀眾弘揚中華文化精髓的收藏家、學者、博物館工作者及其他各界有心人士致意。
