    The Building
    Content

The M+ building in the West Kowloon Cultural District is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world. Located at the southernmost edge of Kowloon overlooking Victoria Harbour, it is among Hong Kong’s most iconic landmarks, both monumental in its architectural form and radically open in its position in the urban landscape.

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with TFP Farrells and Arup, the building is composed of a podium and a slender tower that fuse into the shape of an upside-down ‘T’. The expansive podium cantilevers above ground and includes 17,000 square metres of exhibition space across thirty-three galleries, three cinemas, a mediatheque, a learning hub, and a roof garden that faces Victoria Harbour. The tower houses the museum’s research centre, offices, restaurants, and a members’ lounge on the eleventh floor. The tower’s facade facing the harbour is embedded with LEDs for screening moving image works, which can be seen from the West Kowloon waterfront promenade and Hong Kong Island. Visitors can enter the museum from various points on the ground and lower floors, creating a highly accessible space that offers a continuity between indoor and outdoor areas.

Discover the design features of the building, including the Found Space, Mega-truss Structure, Ribbed Terracotta Panels, and LEDs on the M+ Facade.

    Found Space

    Found Space

Found Space is a cavernous exhibition space that was excavated along the contours of the Airport Express railway tunnel running beneath the building’s site. Originally presented as a design challenge to the architects, the pre-existing tunnel became the basis for the building’s form. The space unifies the basement and ground floors with a broad diagonal opening, providing visitors with an open area that extends across multiple floors. The triple-height space offers many vantage points for viewing the works on display. The textured fair-faced concrete and exposed load-bearing structures maintain the industrial character of the site.

    Mega-trusses

The M+ building is supported by a giant structural system of five high-strength mega-trusses that was installed to distribute the weight of the building across the site without resting any load on the underground Airport Express railway tunnel. The sophisticated engineering system also creates vast column-less spaces that allow for a flexible reorganisation and new perspectives for viewing exhibitions. Parts of the truss chords and diagonals can be seen from around the museum, particularly from the atrium and the roof garden on the second and third floors, adding dynamism to the otherwise rectilinear spatial configuration.

    Terracotta Cladding

    Terracotta Cladding

A modular terracotta cladding system covers the building’s facade and various sections of the ground floor. Distinctive cladding designs with a marked materiality are a signature of Herzog & de Meuron’s buildings. Referencing traditional Chinese roofs, the glazed ceramic tiles of the M+ building are made from a special clay mixture that was extruded through a mould in a ceramic factory in Chianti, Italy—a region historically rich with natural clay deposits. They were assembled into precast units in Shenzhen and shipped to Hong Kong. There are two main categories of modular panels: one for the podium and the other for the tower. The podium panels consist of semi-cylindrical tubes that partially cover the walls and columns in the Main Hall and the different openings of windows, vents, and mechanical systems on the facade. In the tower panels, rows of terracotta mullions and tiles are cast in concrete as part of an aluminium frame with window glazing, functioning as sun-shading louvres for the interiors. The panels lining the tower’s facade facing Victoria Harbour have grooves for insetting LED lights. Altogether, the glazed panels form a seamless stretch of undulating dark-green tiles across the facade, shifting in hue depending on the weather and time of day. The corrugated forms of the terracotta panels, which can be seen at the hem of the podium, add a graphic accent to the angular structure of the building.

The tower’s harbour-facing facade, measuring 66m x 110m, is an innovative curatorial space and an evolving digital exhibition platform that invites viewers to enjoy and participate in the museum’s programmes from afar after dark. Taking a place on the Hong Kong skyline, the space adds another viewing experience and dimension to the building at night. Inset into the facade panels are two types of LED lights that transform the building into a coarse-grained display screen. Combined, they create a hybrid LED-display system that allows viewers to encounter collection works and digital commissions from many points in the city, including the district's Art Park and Hong Kong Island. The design of the panels is optimised to maintain the visibility of the display from various angles, distances, and lighting conditions.
