Overview
A choreographic exploration of esoteric stories by and about women
First staged in 2007, HerStory is an award-winning original work by internationally renowned Hong Kong choreographer Helen Lai, and the final piece in Lai’s "Women's Trilogy" series.
HerStory takes inspiration from Nüshu, the ancient written language developed and used exclusively by women in rural areas of Hunan province, as well as the contemporary prose of Xi Xi and Wong Bik-wan, two women authors from Hong Kong. Drawing on personal and collective memories, it explores women’s role in history and literature through a blend of Chinese and western practices of dance, music and imagery, and presents a powerful depiction of female identity.
This important and groundbreaking work was recognised with awards for choreography and performance at the 2008 Hong Kong Dance Awards.
“A powerful dance about modern women searching for their own identities” – China Daily
“The use of fans and red handkerchiefs add a fascinating visual dimension to the scene.” – South China Morning Post
This programme is co-presented by WestK and the Hong Kong Dance Company.
