Overview
A double bill of signature works by two Japanese contemporary dance artists
This November, the HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform – part of City Contemporary Dance Festival – returns to celebrate regional artistic exchange. Taking place at Freespace, HOTPOT Japan presents a double bill showcasing Da Dad Dada by Saori Hala and ZOU made from fume by Ikumi Kurosu.
Da Dad Dada is an autobiographical performance on the theme of absence and identity. Conceived, designed and performed by Saori Hala, the performance combines dance, theatre, storytelling, sound and video recordings to delve into the artist’s connection with her absentee father, the late musical dance artist Ken Hara. Blending clips of Hara performing in Asphalt Girl – a Japanese musical film from 1964 – and other surviving works and recordings, Hala reflects on the vitality of Japan’s post-war period of regrowth as she reconstructs an image of the father she hardly knew.
ZOU made from fume is a dark and otherworldly piece choreographed, directed and performed by Ikumi Kurosu, founder of dance company BUSHMAN. Wearing hoods, masks and horns, five dancers move within and around a cage-like frame. Part-human, part-animal, they explore real and illusionary emotions and anxieties inspired by a mystical human future. The work showcases Kurosu’s uniquely futuristic style and signature loose-limbed choreography, and features a soundtrack both haunting and evocative.
This programme is part of the City Contemporary Dance Festival 2023 presented by City Contemporary Dance Company, with WestK as Festival Partner.
