    As a cultural district built for everyone, and in particular for the generations to come, sustainability is a major priority. Planning and constructing a district from scratch gives a unique opportunity to develop it as a pioneer of sustainability. The West Kowloon Cultural District will develop into a social, cultural, economic and environmentally dynamic metropolis for the community, fostering long-term cultural development in Hong Kong underpinned by sustainability principles.

    Environmental Sustainability

    We will adopt practical and affordable green initiatives while creating an urban oasis that simultaneously brings people closer to nature and culture.

     

    Three lows: low-energy consumptionlow-carbon emissions and low-cost maintenance will be the key to environment sustainability.

    Throughout the District, shading improves the microclimate and helps reduce energy usage.

     

    • The structure of new cultural buildings will be optimised to balance sun penetration with shading and retain wind permeability for the District.

     

    • The public realm along the promenade to be colonnaded with trees to create shade for everyone.

    Planting trees throughout the District creates the experience and amenity of the Park, provides shade, reduces storm runoff, filters air pollution, creates a pleasant microclimate and increases biodiversity while offering a seasonally-changing tapestry of leaves and flowers.

     

    To prepare for the future development of the Park, we have launched a Tree Nursery for trial tree planting at the site.

    Day lighting supplemented by energy efficient lighting and well controlled low energy systems and equipment including natural ventilation, will help reduce site-wide building energy consumption.

    区域供冷

    The proposed District Cooling System is a significant green feature of the sustainability vision for the District. The potential savings in electricity and fresh water use will further enhance energy efficiency of the development.

    再生能源/资源保护

    Where we can, we will use renewable energy and minimise resources.

     

    • Photovoltaic panels will be installed on the building roofs and other areas to provide solar energy.

     

    • Solar thermal water heating will be implemented to supply hot water for use in the buildings.

     

    • Water retained from rainwater harvesting will be used for irrigation to supplement the treated grey water and reduce the mains water demand.

     

    • All construction waste will be recycled.

    A range of comfortable alternatives to private vehicle transport will reduce cars on site, including good public transport connections, an environmentally friendly transportation system within the site, improved pedestrian comfort and routes, and cycling opportunities.

     

    By putting all service facilities underground, a safe and leisurely environment can be created for pedestrians, enhancing the air quality at ground level.

    The integration of ICT can help the District to:

     

    • improve environmental performance by lowering building operating expenses, reducing administrative land use, increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions

     

    • drive visits and engagement through efficient venue allocation, virtual venue tours, scheduling, ticketing and more effective planning

     

    • enable seamless collaboration between artists and culture lovers from around the world
