The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) values the opportunity to engage young people and the community. It continues to join hand with District Councils under the Crossover Lab Initiative to showcase the distinctive arts and culture of each district, using the Nursery Park in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) as the platform. Riding on the success of the three pilot programmes in collaboration with the Yau Tsim Mong, Kwai Tsing, and Wan Chai District Councils last year, WKCDA and Central and Western District Council brings ‘Picturing Central and Western District @ West Kowloon’ on Sunday, 25 March 2018. In addition, WKCDA partners with The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong (ADAHK) to offer a series of youth and community engagement activities.
‘Picturing Central and Western District @ West Kowloon’ combines picture books, family, community and fun. Various art groups and stakeholders will be paired up to present performances, game booths and workshops. An outdoor library with 500 picture books is also available to encourage a love of reading. Little Green Feet, which took part in the Crossover Lab Initiative last year, returns as the programme partner for the event.
Apart from this, WKCDA also partners with The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups to bring two programmes -- ‘WKCD at Your Hand’s Reach’ and ‘Youth Art Ambassador Programme’. The former using young a cappella singers touring the city to attract visitors to learn more about WKCD in terms of planned venues and artistic programmes. The latter provides opportunity for a group of young people with passions for arts and music to perform along the route to WKCD. This programme not only allows the young people to showcase their creativity but also offers a joyous experience to the WKCD visitors.
In addition, the Authority partners with ADAHK for the ‘Life Planning Programme – Arts Industry Exploration’ starting from this month to July 2018. This school programme aims to introduce the local arts and cultural industries to students and inspire them to discover and create more possibilities in their own life planning. Comprising three parts -- exploration, art tours, and sharing, the programme includes dialogues with artists, visits to arts education organisations or community arts groups, and participation in the WKCD programmes. Through the series of activities, students will be actively engaged in discussion with artists and cultural workers across disciplines.
Mr Duncan Pescod, Chief Executive Officer of WKCDA, said, “With the support and participation of more than 70 organisations, the Crossover Lab Initiative last year had attracted a turnout of over 11,000 participants. This year we step up our effort to reach out to a wider community, in particular the young people, through partnering with more local arts and cultural organisations. With our planned arts facilities lining up for opening this year, we hope that these events will trigger the public’s further engagement with WKCD.”
