The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) is pleased to announce the attainment of its first Lighthouse Club “2017 Derek Smyth Safety Leadership Gold Award” in the Client Developer Category. The Award is an annual event for the industry to acknowledge the outstanding construction safety performance of awardees.

With over 2,000 workers on the West Kowloon Cultural District site, creating a healthy and safe working environment has been one of the top priority for WKCDA. The Safety Target of 0.25 number of reportable accident per 100,000 man-hours is a challenging goal set by WKCDA which indicates the highest standard and requirements expected across all its projects. Strong leadership and collaboration among WKCDA, its contractors and subcontractors prevailed and an outstanding Safety Performance of 0.05 per 100,000 man-hours worked has been achieved to date.

In addition, the WKCDA has introduced various Safety Management Systems across all its construction projects, including a “Pay for Safety Scheme”, a “Safety Incentive Scheme”, and a “Safety Performance Award”, all of which are helping ensure safety at every project within the West Kowloon Cultural District. Since the commencement of the first construction project, WKCDA has managed to maintain a sound overall safety performance with a very low accident rate.

Mr Duncan PESCOD, Chief Executive Officer of the WKCDA, commented, "I am delighted that the West Kowloon Cultural District was presented with the “2017 Derek Smyth Safety Leadership Gold Award” by the Lighthouse Club. This is a recognition of our commitment to putting safety at the core of everything we do. It is also a heartening sign that our efforts to work with our contractors and their subcontractors to achieve the standards of safety we want are effective.  We must all continue to work hard to ensure that our workplaces are safe for everyone.”

Since 1990, the Lighthouse Club has organised an annual Safety Leadership Award to honour excellence in safety practices within the Hong Kong construction industry, and to recognize outstanding leadership in safety. The judging panel for the award comprises industry professionals who shortlist outstanding candidates strictly according to three core criteria: safety management systems, design for safety, and the implementation of safe working practices during the construction phase.
