Early-bird tickets sold out on the first day of sale, public sale to start on 17 October

The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) and Hong Kong Repertory Theatre (HKRep) are pleased to present a rerun of the popular The Impossible Trial – a musical from 30 November to 17 December 2023 at the Grand Theatre, Xiqu Centre, with 15 public performances in total. The Impossible Trial – a musical is the first original Cantonese musical commissioned by the WKCDA, presented and produced in conjunction with HKRep. When the early-bird discounted tickets were on sale starting from 28 September 2023, they were sold out within the first day, showing the overwhelming response to the musical. Public sale of tickets will start on 17 October 2023 (Tuesday) at 10am on the POPTICKET online ticketing platform.

The musical successfully premiered last year with tickets for all 11 performances highly sought-after by the public. Building on years of effort and dedication from the creative team, this painstakingly crafted milestone in the history of original Hong Kong musicals finally made it to the stage and won both popular and critical acclaim. In June this year, the show swept 10 accolades at the 31st Hong Kong Drama Awards, including Best Production, Best Original Music (Musical), Best Lyrics, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor (Tragedy/Drama) and more, receiving the highest number of awards since the awards’ inception.

This year, original cast members Lau Shau Ching, Jordan Cheng and Tunes Ting will lead to restage the musical, meticulously created and staged by composer and musical director Leon Ko, lyricist Chris Shum, playwright Cheung Fei Fan, director Fong Chun Kit, staging director & choreographer Ivanhoe Lam, scenographer Wong Yat Kwan and other members of the production team. The rerun is sure to set off another craze for quality musical productions in Hong Kong.

The musical tells the story of Fong Tong Geng, Guangdong’s most prominent advocate, who is known for his greed and malice. However, at the height of his career, heaven deals Fong a blow and his reputation and wealth vanish overnight. Haunted by the bitter ghost of a childhood friend, Fong fights his way back to the magistracy to right his wrongs and redeem himself as the champion of the common man.

Poon Wai Sum, Artistic Director, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, said: “The much-anticipated The Impossible Trial – a musical is finally coming back on stage with the original cast and creative team ready to bring you a magnificent performance! Our journey, since the premiere in 2019, has been a rugged one, yet we maintained high morale and weathered all kinds of adversity with an iron will. With the support from audience like you, we have created a milestone of Hong Kong original musical theatre, a gem that stands radiant. We are sure that the fruit of adversity is bound to be sweet. This year, we have once again joined hands with the West Kowloon Cultural District to present the Hong Kong classic The Impossible Trial – a musical, to not only local musical theatre fans, but also theatregoers around the world.”

Paul Tam, Executive Director, Performing Arts, WKCDA, said, “I'm delighted that The Impossible Trial, the first original Cantonese musical commissioned by the WKCDA and co-presented and co-produced with HKRep, is taking to the stage once again at the Xiqu Centre's Grand Theatre. We are honoured to collaborate with HKRep to present a rerun of this outstanding production. Last year's performances received tremendous response and critical acclaims. In presenting the show again this year, we aim to attract an even wider audience – including visitors from neighbouring regions – to come and enjoy the creative team's vision and the brilliant talent of our Hong Kong performers. It's going to be an exhilarating evening of music and drama at the Xiqu Centre!”
