The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA / the Authority) is aware of the flooding which occurred in the construction site of L1 Works Contract for Lyric Theatre Complex and the Extended Basement in the West Kowloon Cultural District. The pipe-pile cofferdam wall sprung a leak at the South East corner in early morning of 25 July 2019, leading to flooding to a depth of 1.5-2.0 metres, into the excavated site. As a result of this breach to the cofferdam, a shallow sinkhole of around 25 metres in diameter emerged adjacent to the site within the project area. Immediate action was taken by the appointed contractor of the site, Gammon Construction Limited (Gammon) early this morning, and the leakage stopped at around 9:30am. WKCDA and Gammon are closely monitoring the situation.
WKCDA reaffirms that there are no safety issues or injuries resulting from the incident. The Authority wishes to assure the public that the neighbourhood has not been affected. WKCDA has informed all the related authorities including Buildings Department, and the necessary procedures have been followed. The works in other areas of the construction site are unaffected.
