The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) announced today the appointment of Dr Louis Ng Chi-wa as Interim Director, Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) with effect from 10 September 2018.  Dr Ng, currently Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Culture), is seconded from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to WKCDA for a period of six months.

Dr Ng is currently responsible for the oversight of culture related services managed by LCSD, ranging from museums, performing arts, visual arts to library service. Dr Ng began his career in public museum in 1988 as an assistant curator and was promoted to Chief Curator in 2002 after working in a number of curatorial and managerial positions in various museums. He obtained his BA, MPhil and PhD in History from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies from the University of Sydney.

Mr Bernard Chan, Chairman of the HKPM Board, said, “There is a practical need to set up the organisation, steer the execution of the project, and plan exhibitions and research for the opening of HKPM.   I am pleased to welcome Dr Louis Ng who has tremendous experience working in the museum field in Hong Kong as well as with the Palace Museum.  The secondment will strengthen the expertise within WKCDA to take forward the preparations for the opening of HKPM, including discussion with the Palace Museum arrangements for displaying artefacts from the Palace Museum collection in future exhibitions and provide curatorial input to the construction of the museum.”

“The Recruitment Board for the position of Executive Director, HKPM is taking longer than expected to identify a suitable candidate who could take up the job of leading the development of HKPM from the ground up.  A position of Interim Director, HKPM has been created to take up the leadership position in HKPM pending the recruitment of a permanent director.” said Mr Duncan Pescod, Chief Executive Officer of WKCDA.

Recruitment for the position of Executive Director, HKPM will continue.
