108 students completed the Museum's flagship youth learning programme aiming at cultivating museum professionals and promoting the inheritance of Chinese culture

The Hong Kong Palace Museum’s (HKPM) flagship youth-learning programme—HKPM Student Ambassador Programme (the Programme)—solely sponsored by the China Merchants Foundation, held its recognition ceremony today for the first cohort of students.

Officiating at the ceremony were Dr Louis Ng, Museum Director of the HKPM, and Deng Xiaolin, Senior Supervisor of the China Merchants Foundation. The officiating guests presented certificates to the 108 student ambassadors and joined a student-led guided tour to gain insights into the perspectives and interpretations of Chinese art and culture as seen through the eyes of the talented youth—a perfect demonstration of how traditional Chinese culture has been passed down to the younger generation.

Through a series of learning activities and practical training sessions, the Programme targets local tertiary and secondary students to cultivate their interest in the cultural significance of Chinese history, enhance their understanding and appreciation of cultural relics, and nurture Hong Kong’s next generation of arts and cultural talents. In January 2023, participating students enrolled in the eight-month interactive learning programme encompassing thematic seminars on Palace Museum culture, creative arts activities, conservation workshops, site visits to the HKPM, and docent training. The Programme has equipped them with an understanding of artefact appreciation, conservation, and protection, as well as foundational knowledge of curation and exhibition design. A total of 108 students (comprising 31 tertiary students and 77 secondary students) successfully completed the programme and officially became the first cohort of HKPM Student Ambassadors. Next, they will apply the knowledge and skills they have attained to promote Chinese history and culture by introducing the Museum’s treasures to members of the public from a young person’s perspective. They will also enjoy priority access to the Museum’s learning activities. Over ten students will be selected to join the “Chinese Cultural Exchange Tour” in Beijing next year, during which they will visit various cultural landmarks, including the Palace Museum, and immerse themselves in the splendour of Chinese culture.

Dr Louis Ng, Museum Director of the HKPM, said: “This flagship ambassador programme is in line with the Museum’s mission to promote the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, and encourages young people to take part in promoting cultural inheritance and development. The programme has not only strengthened young people’s cultural self-confidence but also laid a solid foundation for those who are interested in pursuing a career in arts and culture. We express our sincere thanks to the China Merchants Foundation for supporting the Museum in nurturing the next generation of museum professionals, which will strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an international hub for nurturing future arts and cultural leaders.

In 2021, the China Merchants Foundation launched the “China Merchants C ME FLY Hong Kong Youth Sponsorship Programme” to create a platform for collaborations with different sectors in our society, and to provide enriched learning experiences, interest developments, and practical trainings for young people in Hong Kong. The programme empowers the younger generation to fulfil their aspirations through skill trainings. The HKPM Student Ambassador Programme is one of the youth projects sponsored by the “China Merchants C ME FLY Hong Kong Youth Sponsorship Programme”.

Zhang Junli, Executive Director of the China Merchants Foundation, said: “Since the start of its business in Hong Kong, China Merchants has adhered to its corporate mission—‘Promote social progress through commercial success’—contributing to the strength and prosperity of Hong Kong. As the youth are the driving force of our future, we have established the China Merchants Foundation, through which we empower young individuals, invest in leadership, and collaborate with different sectors in our society to create a better future with the younger generation. We are grateful to be a part of the HKPM Student Ambassador Programme. The Programme has broadened local students’ cultural horizons and enriched their cultural understanding, thereby laying the foundation for promoting traditional Chinese culture and fostering the advancement of local cultural industries. The China Merchants Foundation will continue to work with the HKPM to create more opportunities for young people to experience the Palace Museum and traditional Chinese culture.”

The second edition of the HKPM Student Ambassador Programme will be open for applications from local tertiary and secondary students in late September 2023. For more information, please refer to the Programme webpage at: https://www.studentambassador.hkpm.org.hk/.
